While most of the children have gravitated to a large pile of crunchy\nleaves at one end of the green space, L pulls my hand toward a familiar stump\ncloser to the road.&nbsp; In the summer, this\nstump used to be a tall tree, too wide to wrap your arms around, it is now a\nflat stump the children continue to return to; climbing, jumping, sliding,\nexploring the bugs under the bark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This morning the stump offers L and I a new provocation; there are cracked shells of nuts and acorns left in a small pile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"511\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/spiralenergy.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/03\/Sarah-blog-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spiralenergy.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/03\/Sarah-blog-1.png 511w, https:\/\/spiralenergy.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/03\/Sarah-blog-1-235x300.png 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 85vw, 511px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>L sees these shells and begins asking\nquestions as he climbs on top of the stump, sitting beside them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>How\ndid these get here? Did they fall from that tree and break open?\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I answer him saying, \u201cIt looks like a\nsquirrel might have sat here and ate a snack\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cA\nsquirrel did? Where did he get them? Is he coming back?\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019s mittened hand gently prods the nuts, moving them around, and looking up into the tree beside us. His confident reply that it is\nhis grandma\u2019s space and not the squirrel\u2019s space makes me wonder about whose\nspace it really is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can L and I think about the cemetery space that we are currently in? Are we visitors to this green expanse, pests and annoyances to the resident plants and animals? Or are we the <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">one\u2019s<\/g> accommodating the presence of these more-than-humans in a space that we have s<g class=\"gr_ gr_125 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"125\" data-gr-id=\"125\">overeignty<\/g> <g class=\"gr_ gr_119 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"119\" data-gr-id=\"119\">over ?<\/g> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>We wonder about our relationship to this place that we have been visiting for so long. We think about ways that we can shift from notions of ours versus theirs.
